It’s rather easy to say what men should wear and not always as easy to say what you guys should not wear.
I have put together this list of what I think is not ok on a straight man (yes gay men are excused from this list because they are just naturally more flamboyant and colorful and are allowed to try things as they already look gay).
1. Super skinny jeans
Super super skinny jeans are just not ok on a man. By all means wear straight or slim fit – but when you are shopping in the girl’s section for your jeans, you know something is amiss.
2. Over-decorated T-shirts
I dunno what the deal is with detail on T-shirts, men should not be wearing animal faces or stars or some sort on animation on their clothing. Big designer labels are obviously included in this
3. Jeans with detail
This includes; more than 1 zip, tassels, patterns on the pockets, patches, writing, numbers, anything embossed or over-distressed denim. Your jeans do not have to shout out at us, they can just be simple and chic and if you want to do something different – wear a different style like a carrot cut. But do not -no not ever- wear jeans with detail
4. Over-sized jackets or coats
Fitted clothing is always better, no matter what your body shape. It gives you structure and puts accent on your posture, so don’t do yourself an injustice by wearing a scary over-sized coat
5. Cardigans
Now I know there might be some debate surrounding this item and yes I have seen a few straight men pull off this look, but honestly the name says it all; “Cardi-gan”… it’s just so girly and feminine. I mean I am all for a man who happens to be in touch with his feminine side, but if I saw a guy sporting a cardi too often I’d start looking at their partner who is more than likely wearing the pants.
6. Sandals
This is a tough one, I understand it gets hot and girls get to wear pretty sandals but most girls (at least the ones I know) have pedi’s and are allowed to show off their pretty feet. Sandals on a 20-30 something guy just looks weird and frumpy to me. I can’t really think of an alternative but for now I would go with boat shoes.
7. Highlights
It is never ok
8. Polo necks
You are not Richard Gere and no man should aspire to be either. Wear a scarf and jacket to keep the cold out.
9. Earrings
Hmmm I know some guys can pull it off, but I just don’t like it and please no gold or diamonds it just gives me the heeby jeebies
10. Short sleeve button-up shirts
I don’t understand why these things even exist? They remind me of that time guys used to wear T-shirts over long shirts. What happens when it is cold? Do they just put a blazer over the half naked arm… ? I just don’t get it and it looks terrible.
11. Detailed scarves
A scarf is not meant to be another canvas for you to now go and advertise that you are capable of wearing loads of colours. You look like a Christmas tree when you do it. Wear 1-tone scarves or at most something that is 2 colours from the same palette.
12. Three quarter pants
Just no- Don’t
13. Detailed accessories
Yes wear a watch, belt, ring, happy socks or hanky chuffs to create detail to your outfit but stay away from them if those items have detail on them. Go for clean, simple lines in basic colours. Understated cool is always secretly more admired.
So guys, there you have it. The low down on what not to wear. Like I have said a million times before if you are not sure, feel free to ask for advise. I am clearly always willing to give it.
