Not that I am any expert but the only make up brushes I use are the M.A.C cosmetic brushes and I seem to have gotten away with the bare minimal that is required to a meaningful impact.
This might sound really gross but I have had some of these brushes for over 7 years (yes I clean them) and they still do the trick! A absolute must for any girl.
